blooding
Hunter's initiation rite
Blooding is the practice of smearing blood on someone's face as an initiation rite, traditionally done to young hunters after their first kill.
The custom marks a passage into full membership of the hunting community.
More broadly, blooding refers to any first exposure to combat, violence, or difficult experience that serves as initiation: The new recruits got their blooding in the border skirmish.
