bitternut
Thin-shelled hickory nut
Bitternut is a North American hickory tree, or its nut.
The nuts are edible but intensely bitter, making them unpalatable to humans though wildlife eats them readily.
The wood is used for smoking meats and as firewood.
Also called bitternut hickory.
