biozone
Life-defined rock stratum
A biozone is a layer of rock defined by the fossils it contains—a geological time unit marked by the presence of particular species.
Paleontologists use biozones to correlate rock formations across different locations: The trilobite biozone helped date the limestone deposits.
The term also appears in ecology for regions characterized by distinct plant and animal communities.
