bioprosthesis

Biological artificial organ

A bioprosthesis is a medical device made from biological tissue—typically from pigs, cows, or human donors—used to replace damaged body parts.

Heart valves are the most common application: The surgeon recommended a bioprosthetic valve over a mechanical one.

Unlike synthetic prostheses, bioprostheses integrate more naturally with the body and usually don't require lifelong blood thinners, though they may wear out faster.
