bind over
Legally compel attendance
Bind over is a legal term meaning to require someone to appear in court or to keep the peace, under penalty of forfeiting a bond.
A judge binds over a defendant when there's enough evidence to proceed to trial: The suspect was bound over for grand jury proceedings.
Someone may also be bound over to keep the peace, meaning they must avoid trouble or face consequences.
