bail agent

Jail release arranger

A bail agent, also called a bail bondsman, posts bail on behalf of defendants who cannot afford the full amount set by the court.

The agent charges a non-refundable fee—typically 10 to 15 percent of the bail amount—and assumes responsibility for ensuring the defendant appears in court.

If the defendant fails to appear, the agent may hire a bounty hunter to locate them: The bail agent sent someone to bring him back before the court date.
