barber surgeon

Medieval medical cutter

A barber surgeon was a medical practitioner who performed surgery, bloodletting, tooth extraction, and other procedures alongside barbering—cutting hair and shaving beards.

From medieval times through the 18th century, the two trades were united; the traditional barber pole's red and white stripes symbolize blood and bandages from this era.

The professions eventually separated as surgery became formalized.
