sideburns

Facial hair strips

Sideburns are patches of facial hair grown on the sides of a man's face, extending from the hairline down toward the jaw while leaving the chin clean-shaven.

The term derives from the name of American Civil War general Ambrose Burnside, whose distinctive whiskers connected to his mustache while leaving his chin bare—originally called "burnsides" before the syllables reversed.

Sideburns range from thin strips to bushy muttonchops: He grew out his sideburns for a seventies look.
