bail bond

Pretrial freedom payment

A bail bond is a financial guarantee securing a defendant's release from jail before trial.

The defendant or someone on their behalf pays a bail bondsman a percentage of the full bail amount—typically 10 percent—and the bondsman pledges the rest to the court.

If the defendant fails to appear, the bondsman owes the full amount and may send bounty hunters to retrieve the fugitive.

He couldn't afford the $50,000 bail, so his mother arranged a bail bond.
