back nine

Course's second half

The back nine is the second half of an eighteen-hole golf course—holes ten through eighteen.

The term comes from the traditional layout where golfers play "out" on the front nine and return "back" to the clubhouse on the back nine.

Figuratively, being on the back nine means being in the latter part of something, especially life: He's on the back nine now, thinking about retirement.
