match play
Golf scoring format
Match play is a format in golf where competitors win individual holes rather than counting total strokes.
The player or team winning more holes wins the match.
A player who is "two up" leads by two holes; one who is "three down" trails by three.
The Ryder Cup is contested in match play.
Contrast with stroke play, where total strokes determine the winner.
