autonomous zone
Independent territorial enclave
An autonomous zone is a geographic area where established governmental authority has been rejected or expelled, with residents attempting self-governance.
The term gained prominence from temporary protest occupations like Seattle's Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone in 2020.
More broadly, it can describe any space—physical or metaphorical—deliberately operating outside conventional rules or oversight: The back office became an autonomous zone where normal dress codes didn't apply.
