aubergine

Glossy nightshade fruit

Aubergine is the British English term for eggplant—the glossy, typically dark purple fruit used as a vegetable in cooking.

The word comes from French and is standard in British recipes and supermarkets where Americans would say eggplant.

Aubergine also names the deep purple color of the fruit's skin: an aubergine sweater, aubergine lipstick.
