attorney-at-law
Courtroom legal representative
An attorney-at-law is a lawyer formally admitted to practice before courts of law—someone licensed to represent clients in legal proceedings.
The term distinguishes from attorney-in-fact, who merely acts on another's behalf through power of attorney but need not be a lawyer.
In American usage, attorney-at-law and lawyer are interchangeable, though attorney-at-law sounds more formal and appears in official contexts: She was admitted as an attorney-at-law in three states.
