associationism

Ideas through connection

Associationism is a theory in psychology holding that mental life can be explained by the association of ideas—that complex thoughts arise from simpler ones linked through experience, repetition, or similarity.

The doctrine dominated early psychology and influenced behaviorism: Pavlov's experiments supported associationism's core claims.

The term also applies loosely to any emphasis on learned connections between stimuli and responses.
