artillery barrage
Sustained shelling assault
An artillery barrage is a concentrated, sustained bombardment by multiple guns firing on a target area.
The term comes from military usage, where barrages provide cover for advancing troops or destroy enemy positions: The infantry waited for the artillery barrage to lift before moving forward.
Figuratively, any overwhelming volley—of questions, criticism, or information—may be called a barrage.
