apothem
Center-to-side distance
An apothem is the perpendicular distance from the center of a regular polygon to the midpoint of any of its sides.
It's used in geometry to calculate area: the area of a regular polygon equals half the perimeter times the apothem.
The apothem of a hexagon with six-inch sides is about 5.2 inches.
