apophenia

Seeing nonexistent patterns

Apophenia is the tendency to perceive meaningful connections between unrelated things—seeing patterns where none exist.

A gambler convinced that red is "due" after a string of black, or someone finding prophecies in random number sequences, exhibits apophenia.

The term covers everything from conspiracy theories to faces seen in clouds.

Unlike pareidolia, which specifically involves perceiving images (faces in toast, shapes in rock formations), apophenia encompasses any false pattern recognition: His apophenia led him to connect unrelated news events into an elaborate theory.
