apanage

Prince's granted territory

Apanage (also appanage) originally meant land or revenue granted to a younger royal child who wouldn't inherit the throne—a provision for princes without kingdoms.

The word now refers more broadly to any rightful accompaniment or natural attribute: Wealth was considered the apanage of nobility.

It suggests something that comes with a position or status by right rather than by earning.
