angleworm

Wriggling fishing bait

An angleworm is an earthworm, especially when used as fishing bait.

The name comes from the old sense of angle meaning to fish with a hook: We dug up some angleworms before heading to the lake.

The term is chiefly American and somewhat old-fashioned.
