tape head

Reads magnetic ribbon

A tape head is the component in a tape recorder or player that reads, writes, or erases magnetic signals on tape.

The head makes physical contact with the moving tape, converting magnetic patterns to electrical signals during playback and vice versa during recording.

Tape heads require periodic cleaning to prevent buildup that degrades sound quality.
