afterbirths
Delivered after babies
Afterbirths is the plural of afterbirth, the placenta and fetal membranes expelled from the uterus after a baby is born.
In animals, the mother typically eats the afterbirth, a behavior thought to provide nutrients and prevent attracting predators.
In human births, medical staff examine the afterbirth to ensure it has been completely expelled, as retained tissue can cause serious complications.
