abbacy

Head monk's tenure

An abbacy is the office, term, or jurisdiction of an abbot or abbess—the head of a monastery or convent.

The word refers both to the position itself and to the period during which someone holds it: During his abbacy, the monastery acquired considerable lands.

Less commonly, abbacy denotes the abbey or religious community under such leadership.
