abbé

Cassocked French cleric

An abbé is a French title for a clergyman, originally the head of an abbey but later applied more broadly to any man in clerical dress or one who has received minor orders.

In 18th- and 19th-century France, abbés often served as tutors or literary figures rather than active priests: The abbé was a fixture in aristocratic salons.
