a-bomb

Casual nuclear shorthand

An a-bomb is an atomic bomb—a weapon deriving its destructive force from nuclear fission.

The term emerged in the 1940s as shorthand during and after World War II: The a-bomb changed warfare forever.

Now somewhat dated, as "nuclear weapon" or simply "nuke" have become more common in general usage.
