Whiskey Rebellion

Tax revolt, 1794

The Whiskey Rebellion was a 1794 uprising in western Pennsylvania against a federal excise tax on distilled spirits.

Frontier farmers who converted grain to whiskey resisted the tax as unfair; President Washington led militia to suppress the revolt.

The episode established federal authority to enforce tax laws and remains a touchstone in debates about government overreach: invoking the spirit of the Whiskey Rebellion.
