Whipple procedure

Major abdominal cancer operation

The Whipple procedure is a major surgery that removes the head of the pancreas, part of the small intestine, the gallbladder, and the bile duct.

It's the primary treatment for pancreatic cancer and certain other cancers of the digestive system.

Named for American surgeon Allen Whipple, who refined the technique in the 1930s.

Also called pancreaticoduodenectomy.
