Waldeyer's ring

Pharyngeal lymphoid tissue

Waldeyer's ring is a circular arrangement of lymphoid tissue in the throat, consisting of the tonsils, adenoids, and other lymphatic tissue at the back of the tongue and pharynx.

Named for German anatomist Heinrich Wilhelm Waldeyer, this ring serves as a first line of immune defense against pathogens entering through the mouth and nose.
