VIN

Vehicle identity code

A VIN is a vehicle identification number—a unique 17-character code assigned to every car, truck, and motorcycle.

The VIN encodes information about the manufacturer, vehicle type, and production sequence.

It appears on the dashboard, door frame, and title documents: The insurance company asked for the VIN.

Used for tracking recalls, verifying history, and preventing fraud. (Lowercase vin is French for wine.)
