The Unknown Soldier

Nameless war dead

The Unknown Soldier refers to an unidentified soldier killed in war, buried with honors as a symbolic representative of all who died anonymously in combat.

Many nations maintain such tombs as memorials: They laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

The concept emerged after World War I, when industrial warfare left countless bodies unidentifiable.
