T-formation
Classic backfield arrangement
The T-formation is an offensive alignment in American football where the quarterback lines up directly behind the center, with the fullback behind the quarterback and two halfbacks flanking the fullback—forming a T shape.
Dominant from the 1940s through the 1970s, it established the modern role of the quarterback as primary ball-handler: The Bears' T-formation revolutionized the game.
