shotgun formation
Quarterback stands back
A shotgun formation is a football alignment where the quarterback stands several yards behind the center to receive the snap, rather than directly behind.
This gives the quarterback more time to read the defense and find receivers.
The name likely comes from the spread positioning of players, like pellets from a shotgun blast.
They lined up in shotgun on third and long.
