Stigmata

Crucifixion wound replicas

Stigmata are marks or wounds corresponding to those of the crucified Christ—on the hands, feet, and side.

In Catholic tradition, certain saints and mystics have reportedly manifested these wounds spontaneously, taken as signs of divine favor or mystical union: Saint Francis of Assisi bore the stigmata.

More broadly, stigmata can mean any distinguishing marks or characteristics, though this sense is uncommon.

The singular is stigma, which more often means a mark of disgrace.
