St. Mark's Square
Venice's main plaza
St.
Mark's Square is the principal public plaza of Venice, Italy, known in Italian as Piazza San Marco.
Bordered by St.
Mark's Basilica, the Doge's Palace, and arcaded buildings housing historic cafés, it serves as Venice's ceremonial and social center.
The square is famous for its flocks of pigeons, periodic flooding during high tides, and its role as a gathering place for centuries: We fed the pigeons in St. Mark's Square.
Venetians traditionally reserve the term "piazza" for this square alone, calling others "campi."
