Soviet Army
USSR military force
The Soviet Army was the ground forces of the Soviet Union from 1946 to 1991, succeeding the Red Army.
It was among the largest military forces in history, stationed throughout Eastern Europe and Central Asia during the Cold War.
The term often refers broadly to all Soviet military forces: The Soviet Army occupied Afghanistan for a decade.
After the USSR dissolved, it fragmented into the armed forces of successor states.
