tank divisions
Mechanized combat formations
Tank divisions are large military formations built around armored vehicles, particularly tanks, designed for mobile warfare and breakthrough operations.
Developed in the early twentieth century, these units combine tanks with supporting infantry, artillery, and logistics to form self-sufficient fighting forces capable of rapid offensive maneuvers.
The German tank divisions spearheaded the blitzkrieg tactics of World War II.
Modern equivalents are often called armored divisions.
