Saint Lucy

Patron of sight

Saint Lucy is a Christian martyr from Syracuse, Sicily, who died around 304 CE during the Diocletian persecution.

She is the patron saint of the blind—legend holds her eyes were gouged out or that she plucked them out herself.

Her feast day, December 13, falls near the winter solstice and is celebrated with festivals of light, especially in Scandinavia, where a girl wearing a crown of candles represents her.
