SOPA

Anti-piracy legislation acronym

SOPA is the Stop Online Piracy Act, a controversial U.S. congressional bill introduced in 2011 that would have expanded law enforcement's ability to combat copyright infringement online.

The bill sparked massive protests from technology companies and internet freedom advocates, who argued it would enable censorship and harm legitimate websites.

It was shelved in 2012 after widespread backlash, including a coordinated website blackout. (Lowercase sopa is Spanish for soup.)
