soaper

Melodramatic TV series

A soaper is a soap opera, or someone who works on or obsessively follows soap operas.

The term is informal and somewhat dated, from the mid-twentieth century when daytime serials—sponsored by detergent companies—dominated American television: She's been a dedicated soaper since the seventies.
