Albigensian Crusade
Medieval heretic war
The Albigensian Crusade was a 13th-century military campaign launched by the Catholic Church against the Cathars, a Christian sect in southern France deemed heretical.
Named for the town of Albi, the crusade devastated the Languedoc region and effectively destroyed Cathar communities.
It established precedents for using crusading warfare against Christians within Europe and strengthened royal French control over the south.
