Roman provinces
Ancient conquered lands
Roman provinces were administrative territories under the control of ancient Rome, governed by appointed magistrates or military commanders.
Rome divided conquered lands into provinces to collect taxes, maintain order, and defend frontiers: Gaul became a Roman province after Caesar's conquests.
The term now refers historically to these regions or metaphorically to any outlying territory under central control.
