Robert E Lee
Appomattox surrender signer
Robert E.
Lee was a Confederate general who commanded the Army of Northern Virginia during the American Civil War.
A graduate of West Point and career military officer, Lee declined command of Union forces to fight for his native Virginia.
His battlefield reputation and postwar image as a dignified figure made him central to Lost Cause mythology.
The Robert E. Lee statue was removed in 2021.
