Rikers Island

New York jail

Rikers Island is New York City's main jail complex, located on an island in the East River between Queens and the Bronx.

It holds people awaiting trial or serving short sentences, not long-term prisoners.

The facility is notorious for violence, overcrowding, and poor conditions: He spent six months on Rikers before his case went to trial.

The name often appears simply as Rikers.
