Rigoletto

Hunchbacked stage buffoon

Rigoletto is an opera by Giuseppe Verdi, first performed in 1851, about a hunchbacked court jester whose schemes to protect his daughter lead to tragedy.

The title character's name has become shorthand for a figure whose cleverness backfires disastrously.

The opera contains the famous aria "La donna è mobile."
