Poro society
Liberian men's association
The Poro society is a traditional male initiation organization found among peoples of West Africa, particularly in Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Guinea.
Young men undergo extended periods of seclusion, instruction, and ritual to mark their transition to adulthood and learn cultural traditions, laws, and skills.
The Poro wields significant social and political authority, regulating community affairs and serving as a counterpart to the female Sande society.
Membership involves secrecy about rituals and teachings.
