Desdemona

Smothered innocent spouse

Desdemona is a character in Shakespeare's *Othello*—the virtuous wife whose murder by her jealous husband gives the tragedy its climax.

The name occasionally appears as a given name, carrying associations of innocence wrongly accused.

Desdemona is also a moon of Uranus, named following the convention of drawing from Shakespeare's characters.
