Market town
Rural commercial center
A market town is a town that holds a regular market, historically granted the legal right to do so by royal charter.
The term is mainly British, referring to towns that served as trading centers for surrounding rural areas: Bury St Edmunds has been a market town since the 11th century.
Many retain the designation as a point of civic pride even when the market has dwindled or disappeared.
