Mach 1
Barrier jets break
Mach 1 is the speed of sound—approximately 767 miles per hour at sea level, though it varies with temperature and altitude.
Aircraft traveling at Mach 1 are moving at exactly the speed of sound; above it is supersonic, below it is subsonic.
The jet broke Mach 1 and produced a sonic boom.
The term comes from physicist Ernst Mach.
