settlement houses
Urban immigrant aid
Settlement houses were community centers established in poor urban neighborhoods, primarily in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, where middle-class reformers lived among and provided services to immigrant and working-class residents.
These institutions offered educational programs, childcare, job training, and cultural activities while advocating for social reform.
Jane Addams's Hull House in Chicago became the most famous American example.
The settlement house movement helped professionalize social work and influenced progressive-era legislation.
