tribe of Judah
Israelite ancestral group
The tribe of Judah is one of the twelve tribes of Israel in the Hebrew Bible, descended from Jacob's son Judah.
It became the most prominent tribe, producing King David and, in Christian tradition, Jesus.
The tribe gave its name to the kingdom of Judah and ultimately to the terms Jew and Jewish.
In Rastafarian usage, the Lion of Judah symbolizes Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie and African redemption.
